The number of people living with Alzheimer’s disease globally is expected to double every couple of decades, reaching approximately 65.7 million by 2030 and 115.4 million in 2050, Alzheimer’s Disease International projects.
The current Alzheimer’s situation is “an epidemic that is increasing its pace with the graying of the population around the world,” the organization notes.
According to a Medical News Today article, Alzheimer’s Disease International recommends that:
· The World Health Organization declare dementia a world health priority.
· National governments declare dementia a health priority, and countries develop national strategies to provide services and support for patients and their families.
· Low- and medium-income countries create dementia strategies, based first on improving primary healthcare and other community services.
· Developed nations initiate national dementia action plans with designated resource allocations.
· Emerging services take into account the progressive nature of dementia.
· Additional resources be channeled toward Alzheimer’s and other dementia research.
· Government should collaborate, as should caregivers, patients, Alzheimer’s organizations, other non-governmental organizations and professional bodies.
The Alzheimer’s Disease International has some great recommendations, but it will take effort and time to get things rolling.
